2014 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang kicks off
The 2014 Rip Curl Cup has come to the home of Rapture Surfcamp Bali — Padang Padang. The site of the island’s famous tube, Padang Padang draws surfers from all over the world. It’s affectionately (and respectfully) referred to as the “Balinese Pipeline” after Hawaii’s legendary tube. Padang Padang left is a powerful and fast break with waves that average a height of 10 feet (3 meters), while Padang Padang right is a long and beautiful beach break, which is great for beginners, intermediates and longboarders.
Last Saturday (July 5th), the opening ceremony for the 2014 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang kicked off with typical traditional Balinese flair. It began with a prayer ceremony to ask the gods to bless the event with good waves, followed by dancing and other festivities. Finally, came the announcement of the 24 competitors who will battle it out on the waves for $10,000 US plus the coveted cup made of hand-carved teak wood and silver (and filled with Bintang beer!). The competitors will be on call 24-7 until August 17th when the 6-week window for the event comes to an end.
In order to add to the spectacle of the event, there are fewer competitors this year: 12 internationals and 12 of Indonesia’s finest (down from a total of 32 in previous years).
With the world watching via our live webcast, we see the 4-man heat format detracting from the purity of surfing a virtually empty Padang-Padang lineup. Having just two surfers in the water allows both the surfers and the audience to really focus and enjoy this exciting event.

Leading up to the opening ceremony, the Rip Curl team cleaned up the site of the Rip Curl Cup and left Padang Padang beach nice and clean for the event. Some 30 trash bags were filled with rubbish by day’s end.
According to Rip Curl Media, the warm up event, called the Expression Session, was cancelled yesterday but rescheduled for today, Friday the 11th. See the full lineup of the 2014 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang on the event homepage.
