Ericeira photo tour

The other day I walked around Ericeira with my parents to take in the sites and sample some local cuisine. We checked out a few antique shops, strolled through the crowded main square, had a tasty lunch in front of the sea and checked out a couple of Ericeira’s main beaches.

What did I learn from an afternoon stroll through Portugal’s best surf town and the only World Surfing Reserve in Europe? For one, if you’re heading to Ericeira on a hot summer Sunday, don’t forget to pack a bathing suit. I was kicking myself. Oh, and wear sunblock. The sun fell towards the end of lunch, eclipsing the parasol and I came home with one arm a bit red and considerably darker than the other.

Admittedly, I didn’t experience much surf (I just watched from above at Foz do Lizandro), but I did eat my fill of fresh seafood and enjoyed a bit of local wine. That’s what Portugal is famous for, whether you surf or not.

From Surfline:

There is a sea urchin-infested reef break in Ericeira that delivers winding right barrels so fast and hollow that surfers will drive 20 hours just to get a little taste. And there is a restaurant just off Ericeira’s main square that serves a plate of bacalhau so mightily delicious that if the wind switches or swell disappears or you are otherwise skunked, a kind of gustatory redemption can be had. Bacalhau is salted and dried cod. In Portugal it is said that there are more than 365 ways to cook bacalhau, but the kind I’m referring to is bacalhau com todos (cod with everyone)–the plate comes heaping with boiled bacalhau, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, egg, all drizzled in olive oil, garlic, and fresh herbs. It pairs best with a double-overhead west-northwest swell but will happily dance with a glass of Tinto Roriz. Bacalhau muddles things. After a good surf trip to Portugal, it can be hard to distinguish what you miss most: the long, zapping tubes or the steaming plate of bacalhau.

Well, I didn’t have the bacalhau this time, but I know what the author means. Anyway, check out some more of my pics from my Ericeira photo tour Sunday.
