GoPro cam provides POV surfing dogs videos

Surfing dogs are nothing new. Canines have been documented shredding as far back as the 1920’s apparently. So why do we like it so much? Because dogs are cute? Because they’re funny? Or that we somehow just can’t believe they are actually doing it and liking it (maybe some of them don’t)?

The Petco Surf City Surf Dog event in Huntington Beach, California (where else?) is about to have its fourth annual dog surfing extravaganza and everyone is welcome — from bulldogs to wiener dogs to German Shepherds and Chihuahuas. All will gather from the 26th to the 28th of September to compete on the waves and in the fashion department. Some lucky homeless dogs will even get adopted by a few generous humans. Let’s hope so, anyway.

The Surf City Surf Dog event isn’t the only competition of its kind nor is it the only one in California. It’s not even the only one sponsored by Petco. There’s also the Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition and the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon at Dog Beach in Del Mar. Check out this article in the Daily Mail for some cool pics from the latter and this video of the former from the Guardian. Yeah, I know, it’s kind of weird, but people are weird and they’re especially weird when it comes to their pets. Besides, it does look fun you have to admit.

For a different perspective, check out this video from Time Magazine, which uses GoPro cameras strapped to the dogs as they surf.

From a massive Great Dane to a tiny little pug, some of these dogs look pretty happy on the surf and who can blame them?

As I predicted some three years ago, surfing dogs are catching on. I’d say they’re the best animals at surfing besides humans. Dolphins of course don’t count because they don’t use boards — duh.
